As you might suspect, I've attempted Debian before, and got through about 500 packages before giving up in frustration. Nothing, I told myself, is worth this. I tossed the tray lightly aside and teleported myself the Hell out of Zaphod's life.
Not even Richard Fucking Stallman could read through the ENTIRE Debian package list without having a brain hemorrhage. The Debian installer has some basic package groups to get your started, and there are bundle packages that will install whole systems like KDE and Gnome. For anything beyond that, do a keyword search. If you just really, really loathe dselect, there's always the command line:
$apt-cache search mp3
bladeenc - LGPL'ed MP3 Encoder
icecast - MP3 Audio Broadcasting System
lame - MP3 encoder and graphical frame analyzer
lame-shlibs - MP3 encoder and graphical frame analyzer
mad - High-quality MPEG audio decoder
mad-bin - High-quality MPEG audio decoder
mad-shlibs - High-quality MPEG audio decoder
shout - Client for the shoutcast MP3 streaming system
xmms - Multimedia player for the X Window System
xmms-bin - Multimedia player for the X Window System
xmms-gdancer - XMMS plugin featuring dancing characters.
xmms-shlibs - Multimedia player for the X Window System
$sudo apt-get install xmms

Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
