I tend to use Gentoo for the desktop and Redhat for the servers. I wouldn't recommend slack as a desktop for the lack of a "real" package management system and slower development. I seem to remember something about Mandrake going out of business. I've never used Suse, so I can't comment.
More about Gentoo:
Cool, if it Just Worked. Too much stuff breaks too easily right now. I did, however, do an emerge world (pulls down all the updates for all your installed software, then compiles and installs it) over the weekend. 88 or so packages downloaded and compiled on my machine at work without a hitch. On the flip-side, my KDE install at home here is borked. The gentoo-modified kernel is also really nice for the desktop. Comes with all sorts of goodies that don't ship with the kernel (namely the preemptable kernel patch).
