Oh lordy, you've hit it on the head. The martial art I want to learn above all others is Taiji, but the only people I find who teach it around here are fags who call it a "healing exercise" and probably have no idea that it's lethal when done correctly, or at least don't believe it.
Its rarely done correctly, even among 'famous' Chinese 'masters'. The style does have some impact too; for instance finding combative Zhao Bao Taichi will be easier than finding combative Yang Taichi.
Wu is pretty good, and there is a number of fairly competant Wu instructors here in New York. Chen is going to be somewhat trickier since the contention these days is that only the Chen family knows the full system and is not going to be sharing it anytime soon. Personally I would recommend Zhao Bao, but its as hard to come by within fighting taichi as fighting taichi is to come by in the world of... well, taichi.
Not only do you have the health nuts and hippy fruits to worry about, you also have the Wushu gymnasts to worry about. They do "Taichi" as well, but only for performance and, with precious few exceptions, could not fight their way out of an underwater paperdoll brothel with it. These guys are fairly easily spotted though, as they usually claim to teach 10-15 styles.
Does anyone have any idea how I can confirm that a local taiji instructor in some random town is good without meeting them in person?
Usually if they require you to bring fighting gear to class that's a pretty good sign. But in general, you really can't tell. Start slumming around some messageboards such as Kung Fu online; there are some Taiji teachers out there who emphasise combatives. The only real way is to try before you buy. |
