I'm confused about this Genesisification: It had a head start but was inferior in terms of technology? Is that what you mean?

Clearly we need to know more about you, Mark. What do you like to play? Friends? What do they like to play? Do they have any consoles?

The games I really like have not been made since ~1985, but they aren't some impressive anymore so here are some games I have enjoyed over the last few years:

Die by the Sword
Quake 3/Battlefield 1942/other shooties
Tekken 3, Tekken Tag (the latter, esp)/Soul Caliber haven't played virtua fighter 4 although I hated 1 and 2...
All manner of turn based, practically a board game, games (although CIV3 can blow me...) But either the quality of these is dropping or I don't like them anymore...
Smash Brothers (the original, which is oddly compelling, as it is one of the simplest fighters ever...)
GTA3
Moto Racer
Myth
Metal Gear (didn't play the second one... which friends said was the most enjoyable stupid ever...)
Virtua Tennis 1/2
Those FIFA games, although a good american football game would also be nice. That is, not NFL BLITZZZZ!!!

Old games I think someone might have tried to update by now:
Archon
Nobunaga's Ambition (NES/Gameboy version, don't know if there were others...)
the oft mentioned Rivercity Ransom

The subset of my friends who play videogames fall into two broad categories:
jap rpg lovers, which means they own PS2s. As I hate jap-rpgs with a passion aside from like FF/FF2 which are a little old to discuss...
computer strategy game lovers, as in Civ, Alpha centauri or AOE, with the odd computer RPG (BG2, esp. which I also liked).

I think one of my friends has a GC although I never see him outside of the bar... I don't have any friends with xboxs.

And when I get together with friends from these two categories to play games, we play boardgames or poker, not video games. Except for smash brothers and the yearly game of MULE, I guess. Still, as far as social games go, boardgames are king.
