Seriously? God DAMN. That's a full-time job for 5 weeks!
Not really. That's the box copy but even playing anally and doing every sidequest, searching every pick-area = about 80hours. Still - It's far and away the longest game I've played. Well, maybe except Planescape - It's been so long since I played that I can't really remember. Also tack on the mods that BDR mentions in the review and that will add some hours.
BDR: About how many hours does Darkest Day add?
Planescape (and I daresay every other game ever made for that matter) doesn't even compete when it comes to length. I'm sure if you BREEZE through BG2 like a motherfucker you can cut down the time substantially, but I'm certain I logged over 100 hours. No joke. It was honestly Morrowind-esque when it came to getting quest after quest after fucking quest (I *still* haven't won Morrowind with my very first character - what the hell!). Whereas I believe P:T is in the 20-30 hour range.
Then again I know how to win P:T easily in a general sense now, so I probably eliminate aimless wandering when I play now - I'm not sure if it took much longer my first time through or not. The comparative lack of optional areas probably helps.
P:T played for the first time is a hell of a lot longer than successive sessions, IMO. Think about reading all that text for the first time, the not-so-obvious plot points/locations you needed to get to to move the game along. If that game didn't have running, only THE LADY OF PAIN knows how long it would have taken. Playing that game for the first time is an easy second to BG2.
The lower level of combat helps too, I think, especially for an inventory fag like me. You kill some bad guys, they drop 5 copper and a rusty fucking knife. Where's my ph4+ 73\/\/+z? Who cares, but there's a lot less "mandatory" dicking around to do in P:T when you're replaying it on the straight and narrow.
Planescape: Torment - if you know all the text nearly by heart - and if you do EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE SIDEQUEST, POTENTIAL EXPERIENCE GAIN, AND POTENTIAL UPGRADE, AND POTENTIAL ALIGNMENT-SHIFTING ACTION - will take in the area of 100-150 hours. Trust me on this, I've done it once before and I'm doing it again right now. After forty hours straight I've yet to complete the first 4 hive areas, no joke. This is with 140-page FAQ in hand to help me judge the alignment shifts, btw - I've long since memorized every possible subquest available.
I wish I wish I WISH there was some fucking way to perform every subquest and be an Anarch AND be Lawful Good for the rest of the game. Can't pull it off, though, no matter how I try.
