My kids are theater kids (my 17yo is going to college for theater tech in the fall, his younger brother is 12 and has already been in a few productions including one starring role) and being an Involved Dad has led to me spending all my free time as the sound crew head for their theater troupe.
Theater troupe: (nothing)
Me: FINE, I'll write original music for A Wrinkle In Time!!!!!
It's been very fun, half our plays are musicals (which of course come with their own music) and for the other half (the "straight plays") I have been writing scores. I've gotten to do, let's see, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe...Puffs...The Wind in the Willows...Holes...Poe: Dreams of Madness...A Wrinkle In Time. I'm currently working on a score for our production of Little Women, and after that we're doing Hamlet.
It's rewarding because it's fun to do a big art project with a bunch of kids and also selfishly I get to inflict my music on audiences at a much larger scale than any previous musical project since a couple thousand people see each of these shows. But the scores themselves are mainly comprised of little 15-second transitions and/or relatively simple underscorey things so there's no real reason to put any of it online, which I have not done.
When Hamlet is done I do want to go back and do some Bachelor Machines and Haunted Lakes music because all my synths and pedals are sitting here looking at me all sad and lonely. |
