For general cleanliness, do Start->Run: "msconfig". It works with all modern Windows OS's, except those it doesn't work on (NT-based).

Click on the Startup tab and look through all the fun programs that are run when your computer boots. I like disabling anything I don't recognize--stuff like "FunShopper" and "Gator.com" are obvious, whereas "internat" (international keyboard settings--this is ok) are dubiously hostile programs. I've found this is also an invaluable tool when attempting to de-latch virus scanners from my system. My one-year contract with you has run out, why don't you give it up?
I'm sure someone on the internet has a complete listing of all "standard" programs which run on startup. Sure enough [warning - horrendous color scheme in use]
