Iran. WTF? Is he saying we are going to start support Iranian "freedom fighters"? I don't know why it's not being covered more extensively in the media, but there has been a Tiananmen Square-type thing building up in Iran the last year or so. They say they want want a secular democracy, and carry (unlit) US flags in their protests. Here is a website associated with the movement. Michael Ledeen in National Review covers it pretty frequently, but hardly anyone else does.
Also, google: Hashem Aghajari. More people should know his name.
I am amazed too that this sort of thing gets no airtime. Every Iraqi expatriot has told us that the only thing keeping Saddam in power is the fear he wields. The United States has scored a moral victory of sorts insofar as the constant pressure placed on the country has thoroughly convinced its people that Saddam is a lunatic. Of course, all this is an excellent support for the idea that a regime change may be viable with a minimum of violence. I believe such a coup d'etat seed would be most effectively laid by the military (who can assure the people of Iraq, with their presence, that Saddam can no longer hurt them), but I doubt the US military's finesse in this matter, though I don't pretend to be an expert. I assume that one of the biggest hurdles to this is that the UN shuns organized coups as much if not more than it does military action. |
