It's the Avalanche crew of Final Fantasy 7, starring in Final Fantasy 7 presents: Ghost in the Shell.
Tifa entices Cloud to join Barret's crew, but don't get too attached to Jesse, Vicks, and Wedge as they plan a strike against President Shinra.
Ghost in the Shell at its heart was an autistic adult pervert clumsily trying to be philosophical. Edgerunners' is a 12 year old boy pervert trying to be philosophical.
GitS at least had some landmark action setpieces. Edgerunners just has the protagonist use bullet time, which means everything else freezes still to save on the animation budget while he moves slowly. Not in a Matrix way, but in a really gay Marilyn Diptych way.
The setups are structured like a heist movie, except they just anticlimactically fail. At everything. Everyone dies to completely random stuff unrelated to heists. It's like watching The Usual Suspects but the entire cast dies to a drunk driver, random mugging, and overdose before they even reach the boat.
I normally would just shrug at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and say, "It sure is anime." But I'm seeing nothing but raving reviews how it's one of the best animated adaptation ever. What did they watch?
