Since this game didn't cost 7 million dollars (unlike some OTHER backrooms games I could name), I decided to try it out. After beating it, I can report back that it is... ok.
It plays a lot like Escape the Backrooms, and probably was inspired at least in part by that game. The biggest difference is that it focuses somewhat more on puzzles and somewhat less on action than Escape the Backrooms did. I think the atmosphere and graphics are a bit better than EtB, although it's been a while since I played the latter.
Bad things: the flashlight is ASS. It lasts a very short amount of time, and the dev made the inexplicable decision to not have it regenerate when you die. So while you get multiple lives, that's not always very useful in a dark level. Oh, and when the flashlight is about to run out, it flickers like a fluorescent light. I'm sure this was hilarious to somebody.
There is an inventory (same as EtB, again), but like EtB it's of very limited usefulness. You DON'T get to store flashlight batteries in your inventory, you use them immediately. And if you pick up batteries when your flashlight is full, they vanish. This is assuming the level even has batteries -- a lot of levels, including dark ones, have none.
There is a level select, which I used quite heavily, because ain't nobody got time to play this shit from the beginning.
The action sequences are quite janky -- enemies in certain levels frequently get stuck on things or sail through the air without touching the ground. This is something that EtB did better. I did like how Descent has some enemies turn the lights to red when they pass.
Favorite level: poolrooms. (Isn't it always?)
Least favorite level: Run for your Life. Sorry, but I just do not like running sequences where you have to memorize which way to go. Disliked that in EtB, disliked it here.
Overall this is not as good as Escape the Backrooms but if you wanted more content like that, this is that.
Oh, and they named the science organization something really stupid like GLURB or GLORB. Come on, man. Just call it A-SYNC like Kane did. |
