They haven't figured it out, and the things they have figured out generally suck by pinback 05/22/2022, 5:57am PDT 1. Why would you have a stamina meter in a game where the ONLY THING YOU CAN DO is walk/run? "Play this game, except stop every few seconds to do nothing, for no reason." 2. So far the only idea seems to be "survive long enough to walk an arbitrarily long distance at which point you can leave the level, and also sometimes a monster will chase you." This is exciting for about five minutes, and then it isn't. I think the reason it's hard to turn into a game is that the main protagonist of the Backrooms is the rooms themselves. Even without entities, Level 0 is the creepiest thing I can imagine. It's the uncanny valley, but with environments, and cranked to 11. The only decent game I can think of making is like a base-building thing, and you have to explore ever further to get resources and stuff. Subnautica but with yellow wallpaper instead of alien ocean.
