That would mean having a skilled labor force, business regulations that were reasonable, and so on. Oh, that's too hard? Well, if we don't have that stuff, handing money to cronies isn't going to make it materialize. As demonstrated here. Anyway, even if China invades Taiwan and the current POTUS pulls another Afghanistan style "huge W" (where we refugees are hanging off of the last airplane out), it's not even that big of a deal. (I mean, for us... it's obviously very bad for the Taiwanese.) We build tons of CPUs here in the US of A. Just not the bleeding edge stuff. So we'd slap some sanctions on China and then take a few years to build up bleeding-edge chip fabs here locally. Apple and NVIDIA stocks would take a hit as they would suffer some supply-chain disruption. Which isn't the government's problem. If those companies want onshore fabs as a backup, they should pay for it themselves rather than stealing from taxpayers.
