There have been times where I think that I should really go get the latest version of MAME. And then I remember the ROMs. The ROM issue.
I don't get it or understand it. You have at most three revisions of a board. MAME has been around for 25+ years. The boards themselves are going on being 40+ years old. I am sorry, there is no reason to have as many ROM changes as there are. Explain it to me and I'll still disagree. I understand, though do not agree with, their take on having a "main" ROM like puckman.zip and then the requirement that you have to have, along with that, specific changes for your game (pacman.zip) because hard drive space and transfer speeds used to be low and slow when the project started in the 1990s. But not anymore. So I can buy ONE ROM change for everything if they just put all the files you needed in the zip, but to my knowledge they haven't done that.
The people running the MAME project know everything though, so what are you going to do. Yes, MAME is still a thing, but my desire to ever play the "debug the missing ROMs issue" is zero, I hope it's zero for you as well. MiSTer does not support as many games, but I give them credit for having the update-all script just take care of everything. I am sure one day the MiSTer update-all script will start deleting games though, so what are ya gonna do.
They changed the romset for Robotron in 2021.
No thought, not the slightest thought of backwards fucking compatibility. Just a fuck you, find some ROM site that hopefully isn't under a denial of service attack at the moment. Absolutely incompetence from a software management perspective. Fuck MAME. |
