| Am I turning into a cranky old man, or was there something about stumbling across a random game in an unexpected format (like a cocktail cabinet) tucked away in the most unexpected corners of businesses (like the time I encountered my first Aliens vs Predator cabinet next to the cigarette machines at a decently upscale fish restaurant) that's lost in our modern age where you can have every type of game you could possibly want without leaving your desk chair.
I had a conversation recently where someone asked me if I missed Blockbuster video. The answer is yes and no. I loved mom & pop rental shops with wood paneling and crazy posters on the wall for films that never lived up to the cover art. I loved browsing the back room of Four Star Video Heaven in Madison, where I would find the craziest foreign films from Tetsuo the Iron Man to Three Colors: Red. Compared to now browsing through Netflix or Prime where I see things of vague interest, but the act of scrolling through title after title only drains my enthusiasm. But I do NOT miss Blockbuster. Half the shelves were dozens of copies of the latest theatrical releases, the anemic remaining shelves were the usual suspect classics you've seen a dozen times before. Plus Blockbuster was owned by the Mormons, so they'd have studios do special cuts of films to remove most of the nudity. What were we talking about? Oh yeah, cocktail cabinets. They ruled. |
