After completing the game I see where they're coming from on a few things but it by didn't quite work out 07/28/2023, 3:11pm PDT
So the big thing is there's like 2 major difficulty spikes in the game - and the first is literally after your first two fights -

- after you push to Ernie Village and capture it, pistols start disappearing from the enemies and they start toting AK-47's and SMG's. And not just that but they also have enough ammunition (that they don't drop) to spray and pray you, while you maybe have one character with light flak armor if you paid extra for an experienced mercenary. Their HP's also go up to like 40 from 20-ish. That's great except you maybe have an AK-47 and a rifle, everyone else has pistols/machine pistols.
Headshots with a pistol no longer cut it. Had a guy take 5 rounds to the chest before he dropped. Which is fine except you have to basically take rounds to the chest and pray you don't die (though dying is super-forgiving in this game so it's a viable strategy...less so if you turn on the 0 HP = dead thing)

- The other difficulty spike can be triggered either 1/3rd or 2/3rds of the way through the game, depending on what happens -- it basically replaces all the militia-guys you've been fighting with army regulars. This is great because the army guys have modern late 20th century NATO weapons like FN-FAL's and M16's, but it's bad because they rapidly recapture every single city and mine on the map, quickly putting you in the red. It seems somewhat counterproductive to getting people to maintain interest to absolutely wipe the map and force you to redo all your progress.

Also -- counter-intuitively it seems like capturing outposts punishes you rather than aids you as most of your ammo is going to come from dead enemies they throw at you in counterattacks. Once that supply dries up you're going to have ammo problems, and enemy rifles are also your main source of scrap, which disappears as well. This game needs some sort of Bobby Ray's like I said.

The mines having a diminishing return didn't bother me. It's pretty forgiving. But I think that there's a couple of game design choices which are antagonistic instead of complementary and it can be a bit frustrating to adapt to.

(I did finally figure out how you can check the weather in a grid location, but some sort of weather forecasting intel would be nice)
