All they had to do with that movie is land the plane, and they did it. They had a 22(?)-movie arc and they gave it a decently satisfying conclusion. The middle hour with the time travel stuff is dumb but they go as far as saying "time travel is in movies is dumb, don't think about it" and it's clearly in the movie as a highlight reel: they're doing a victory lap and reminding us that they'd been at this for a decade at that point. The final battle is fun. The bit where Steve Rogers goes back in time to be with his girlfriend made me feel good and also doesn't make any sense at all, either in the continuity of the movie itself or in terms of how the history of the franchise works, but whatever: I don't hold these movies to a high standard in terms of coherent storytelling. It felt like a satisfying conclusion.
However: they should have quit while they were ahead. They succeeded in getting everyone to give a shit about superheroes for a decade and they deserve congratulations for that. My org literally created a temporary Slack channel for Endgame spoilers when it came out! But then they couldn't turn the money printer off, even though it's clear no one's heart is in it. They just keep cranking out more movies and I don't even want to see them anymore. I loved NOPE, partly because it's really exciting and odd but also partly because it's a Hollywood popcorn movie that isn't a fucking superhero movie. (Don't get me started about the TV shows. They feel like assigned reading at this point and maybe that's part of why I have started resenting the whole endeavor.)
I think the moment I was all the way out was when somebody pitched the new Batman movie (THE BATMAN) as "SE7EN, but with Batman!" and I was like "You can make SE7EN without Batman!!!!! People have done it!" I remember in 2015 saying to someone "If you would have told us in 2005 that the two most popular entertainments were a fantasy show about dragons and a movie franchise about superheroes, no one would've believed it." Now I would love a 2025 where that isn't true but that's equally hard to imagine. We need something else. They've got to come up with some kind of movie that teens and adults will go see that isn't a reboot and doesn't have superheroes in it. The only two movies I'm excited about this fall are DON'T WORRY DARLING and SEE HOW THEY RUN because they've got hot people in them that aren't fighting the Joker for once, jesus christ. |
