Spoony was always a solo act and Mike definitely never steals the show, but agreed on how bad they are. I didn't even know Spoony still made stuff. Last I heard, he had some meltdown years ago and went dark, only popping up on chats or small streams to yell at people.
I thought Spoony had some mental health issues and kind of burned out. The Twitter drama didn't help, but it was honestly probably downstream of the mental health stuff.
Is Spoony actually posting things again?

James Rolfe has put AVGN on autopilot for a while and tried to branch out into so many other things, all terrible. The guy just sucks outside of swearing at old controller-throwing games. Like all game critics, he really wants to be a FILMMAKER. Most of his other efforts are film discussions, and it's embarrassing how little him and friends actually know or how terrible his tastes are. The Redlettermedia guys know their film history. Cinemassacre will have an episode devoted entirely to Predator, and one of his friends will exclaim, "The same guy directed Die Hard? Really?"
The funny thing is, James Rolfe (aka AVGN) always loved films way more than video games. But he hit the jackpot with his "angry video game guy" shtick and nobody cared about his film interests.
He is honestly very Ed Wood-like in that he has SO MUCH enthusiasm for film and SO LITTLE talent. A lot of YouTubers want to be famous, or they want money. James just wants to make The Big One -- as Ed Wood would say "the one that I'll be known for." And of course it will never, ever happen because he has zero talent.
YouTube is kind of gross when you think about it. A lot of people want it to be a kind of farm system for Hollywood, but it's not that at all. It's more like a kind of digital freak show. A dead-end career where you humiliate yourself. A kind of 21st century circus run by the creepy clowns at Google. |
