That said, I came away from it wondering how someone who hadn't read the books would be able to follow the plot, so much gets glossed over so fast.
I was correct in my assessment that Josh Brolin was horribly miscast as Gurney Halleck. They needed an actor who was uglier yet more charismatic. On the flipside, Jason Momoa perfect as Duncan Idaho, the trailer gave me the absolute worst impression.
THANK GOD the movie doesn't shy away from Paul's "terrible purpose." If you came away from this thinking that Paul is Neo, part two is gonna take you for a loop.
And it's weirder than the Lynch version! Love the whole Sardaukar cult. 40k Space Marines wish they were this cool.
If you're wondering, in the books the three biggest weapons are shields, lasguns, and planet-cracking nukes. Shields bounce off nearly any fast-moving projectile, only carefully slow ones can penetrate. Lasguns cut through anything, but if they connect with a shield, they cause a small scale nuclear explosion, so they're only used in very limited circumstances. (There's a scene in the book where Duncan Idaho takes out a pursuing group of Sardaukar with lasguns by setting up a shield that blows up in their faces.) So fighting in this universe is primarily done through hand-to-hand combat by soldiers who know how to parry fast to activate their shields but attack slow to penetrate.
I've only seen commercials for Jodorowsky's Dune, but I recognized several designs.
Here's hoping for an extended special edition when it comes out on disk! |
