A second rate port house WHO JUST LOST COUNTER-STRIKE: CONDITION ZERO IN MID-DEVELOPMENT to Ritual is now tackling the PC port of a game that COULD be the next big multiplayer FPS, but which I now worry about tremendously.
Gamespy (http://www.gamespy.com/previews/december02/csczpc/):
--------
"From my experience, Valve is filled with very smart and talented people," says Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, "and certainly Gearbox has plenty of smart and talented people as well. There should be a certain level of trust that those closest to a project are making smart decisions because they're privy to more information than everyone else and because they have experience in matters of game software development. I have large amounts of respect for Ritual, I've been longtime friends with many of their senior management and have worked with them directly in the past. They are survivors and they know what's good and what isn't -- even when things haven't always been easy for them. They know how to make sacrifices when it makes sense and they know how to stick to their convictions when they can. This is the sort of project that will serve them very well if they serve it well. I have lots of hope for what they produce and know firsthand that they are putting everything they can into it."
---------
What the fuck does that mean? "We're all very smart people, I'm not sure what happened, Ritual have had some rough times, but they're good peeps". In an effort to control the damage he spirals into an "I'm OK, you're OK" speech. Gamespy's first comment about the latest version of CS:CZ is "After checking out Condition Zero, it's quite obvious that Ritual has basically started from scratch". So to recap, Gearbox had CZ yanked away from them and given to another company (who were told: START OVER), and now Gearbox is freed up to move on to Halo. Not even all of them moved onto Halo -- only 25%!
Gamespot:
---------
Gearbox has been involved with a number of smaller projects and conversions in the last year, including the PC versions of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and James Bond 007: NightFire. According to Pitchford, this is a part of the studio's long-term strategy as it's been "gearing up for primetime," referring to a major unannounced game project. He mentioned that only 25 percent of Gearbox's staff is working on Halo.
----------
...AND 43% OF THOSE EMPLOYEES ARE PART TIME! AND SOME OF THOSE ARE RETARDED! Great, way to brag about the lack of effort you're affording Halo PC. My hopes are soaring. Why not explain that you've got nuclear scientists working on the network code? Get us excited about it! I want to hear how the team is working around the clock to make the game incredible. Instead, Gearbox would like us to know that not only do they have only night watchmen on the project, but that's it's REALLY HARD, as the Gamespot article seems to focus on the hurdles and how they've gotta develop the network code from scratch. Great! I love Gearbox's network code!
Finally, my stomach turned when I heard that... "Gearbox's creative focus is on the multiplayer, and the developer plans to include new maps, and may also add weapons and vehicles. " ...because one thing that everyone said about Halo was "Goddamn these vehicles and weapons suck". Normally I wouldn't be such a pessimist, but these guys can't finish a fucking Half-Life mod enough to please Valve -- a company that hires kids out of their bedrooms to fill retail shelf space. I hope the Day of Defeat guys inherit the Halo PC port job once it gets pulled from Gearbox.
Anyway, it's got a mid-2003 release date, which is the good news in all of this. |
