For those a little confused by what the hell this game even is, I'd put it into the action/puzzler category alongside Superhot.
I've gotten as far as finishing the Sanctioned Op's quest chain so far and she has a boss battle against a "Murdertruck" that is indeed quite powerful (though I kind of stupidly came into that battle with an underpowered setup so maybe it's not that hard with a prototype-class weapon).
Despite what the reviews say, you can actually drag out a run for a seemingly indefinite period before cashing in the final quest, despite the gas price hikes, because the mission difficulty and payout increases accordingly.
The big thing that changes as you get into the higher difficulties is the enemy car density, which combined with the game's collision physics engine leads to more opportunity for laugh-inducing blues brothers-esque pileups. Also the enemy cars don't seem to get that much stronger so the escalating feel of power with improved weaponry is definitely there.
The biggest protip I have for this game is to remap the keyboard controls so boost is Shift and Brake is Control (or your preferred FPS equivalent). They lean way too heavily on the tactical slo-mo and its awkward interface in the tutorial. Once I got a comfortable control setup and a feel for the game, I ended up playing missions mostly in real-time and it's much more fun like that.
I am disappointed by the soundtrack. It isn't grating but it ain't Brigador, and the best track is reserved for the final boss battle only.
For the most part I find it to be an unambitious game with a light but satisfying system. An excellent podcast game. |
