| The Force Awakens was a crude rehash of the original trilogy. Rogue One was way too dark. The Last Jedi was... vaguely acceptable? Even entertaining.
But yeah, everything Rafiki said is basically 100% correct. The Force was a lot cooler when it was a mystical kung fu power that you could develop by training under ancient masters. Now it's just a mutant power that you either have or you don't, same as X-Men. But X-Men at least had interesting and different powers. "The Force" is now basically just whatever plot armor is needed. Yoda doesn't even give a shit about the ancient texts any more, because lighten up maaaaan. The original movies had the romantic tension between Han and Leia, plus the family drama between Luke and Darth Vader. This movie has... Rey, who never expresses an emotion, Finn, the fat Asian girl, and a bunch of other forgettable characters. I guess the interaction between Kylo Ren and Rey is probably the most interesting character development in the whole movie. But it's really only development on Kylo's side, because Rey continues to have no defining character attributes. It's also... kind of predictable? Kylo turning good would have been too obvious, as well as being a blatant rip-off of the original trilogy. They tried really hard to make this movie less predictable. Too hard, as Rafiki noted. There's a lot of WHAT A TWEEST moments with the rebel commander, Luke's hologram, and so forth. I don't usually have a lot of sympathy for star wars NEEEEEEERDs. But I will say one thing: if they had just taken any random fanfic from the expanded universe and made it into a series, it probably would have been better than this crap. |
