1. Dominus Galaxia - Though obviously heavily inspired by MOO1, it departs a little bit in what I'd consider good way -- hex combat, colonization without fiddling with colony ships, for example. It's already in really good shape, and that link will show you an email address that you can email and get into the beta if you want to take a look.
2. Remnants of the Precursors - Not inspired by, but instead a modernized, exact recreation of MOO1, complete with all the old races, mechanics, everything. Less far along than DG, you can simply download the current alpha from that site and try it out.
My initial reaction -- particularly to DG -- was, oh yeah, this IS a lot more fun than building the same buildings everywhere, dicking around with food distribution, and all the other various complexities that have been added to the space 4X genre since 1993. Good stuff. |
