I...can't remember what happened. It closed with Arya saying she's going home. People left the Riverrun castle?
Here's what I mean by "nothing happens": if a scene or plot ends the exact same place it began, cutting it would mean the show seamlessly continues as if nothing had happened, then nothing happened.
What if, instead of Arya sailing off to Bravos at the end of season 4, she had just decided to stay? How would it have been the slightest bit different from her arriving back 3 seasons later? She didn't even get any of those face change superpowers from the temple of boring. It could have been cut without the slightest bump. Two seasons!!! Arya's plot, Dexter's Masuka's plot, and Breaking Bad's Car Wash plot should have a who gives a fuck battle royale.
What the hell changed from the entire Riverrun plot? Some guy we don't know took a castle we don't know then Brienne went down there but then the castle was surrendered without a fight and now Brienne is going back. What was the point?
I thought Bran's plot would be awful, but it's head and shoulders above the rest because things actually happened. Why wasn't all that Nedd flashback stuff right in season 1 where it would have done some good? Have an entire flashback episode framed by Robert and Nedd shooting the shit about the old days. It would have been a hell of a lot more effective than the 20 road trip scenes of them talking.
I have no clue how anyone who hasn't read the books has any idea about the backstory. I only have half a clue from playing the board game (which isn't good) and looking up the stuff there on a wiki. How compelling is the writing really when, after years, you still don't know half the characters' names? Quick: what are the names of the slave girl and Unsullied dude? The eunuch? |
