Female Shepard was always jankier than Male Shepard, she was always a Bride of Frankenstein creation. BioWare's pipeline was built to pump Mark Vanderloo, with every other character getting just enough attention to differentiate them from Mark Vanderloo, based on their prominence in the game. Every time an in-engine cutscene depicted Female Shepard sitting with her legs splayed out, one arm draped casually over her junk, you could tell it was blocked for a male model.
Did you ever try selecting the option in the original Mass Effect to customize Male Shepard's face, then accepting it without making any changes? What got saved was a pale imitation of the default face, which was a special one-off sculpt polished to a higher level of detail than you could get out of the Mr. Potato Head machine. Female Shepard's default face didn't suffer the same downgrade when you did that because it was just a regular face-creator face to begin with.
Nobody cared about the inexplicably shitty models and animations in the first Mass Effect, because it was only the second PC-style RPG most of them had ever played (after Oblivion, which was somehow even worse in those respects). Just having the option to choose your gender was mindblowing to a generation weaned on Final Fantasy.
Mass Effect Andromeda was built on a new engine (Frostbite), at a new studio (Montreal), by a new team (not only new to the company, but also new to doing their own laundry), with - perhaps most important of all - new tools and a new pipeline. On top of that, BioWare was objectively terrible at every conceivable aspect of games development to begin with. Except community management, I guess. You might as well say they purposely botched every drivable vehicle they ever implemented just to push some anti-carbon agenda (which you KNOW they have), and made resource-mining so unbearably tedious as a protest against Big Not Wasting Our Fucking Time.
