Village industrialization by fabio 06/29/2016, 11:36am PDT
You have raw materials (timber, coal, iron, wool), which your factories can turn into processed materials (lumber, steel, cloth), which other factories can then turn into manufactured goods (furniture, arms, clothing). Each step takes 2 points of labor and you need internal transport points (sort of like the transport pool in MOO2) to ship all the harvested raw materials to your capital.

When I tried playing with just the straight line from harvesting, I was always ridiculously behind the AI and just chalked it up to massive cheating.

A mechanic that is not explained AT ALL is village industrialization where your villages outside your capital will begin producing stuff on their own. You have to have a province with at least 4 of the same raw material (not necessarily harvested with depots, the potential for 4 just has to be there), a depot on or adjacent to the village (depots adjacent to villages give no explained bonuses otherwise so you wouldn't do it), and your manufactured goods factory of the corresponding type (furniture factory for timber, etc) expanded to a certain size. Once all these are met, processed materials and even manufactured goods will start being produced for free that you can transport to your capital. So normally 1 unit of furniture would cost 4 timber (to turn into 2 lumber), 4 labor (2 labor for each step), and 2 turns. Village industrialization can just give you that furniture for free.

I was playing thinking I had to put depots on every possible resource patch and connect it all by railroad to the capital. All you need to concentrate on at first is building a depot next to the villages whose provinces have at least 4 of a resource then connect that to the capital. It's such a huge boost to your economy. My win rate on normal shot from 10% to 75%.
