Women can do very well in comedies, in women-centric movies, and women-related roles in comedy films. Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Mary-Louise Parker, were great in Fried Green Tomatoes. The women in Steel Magnolias. Cher in Moonstruck. Even J-Lo in Monster in Law did a great job trying to stand up to Jane Fonda, who herself isn't really known for comedic roles, and she pulled it off.
Who doesn't remember Meg Ryan's Cake Orgasm in When Harry Met Sally? Or Rob Reiner's mother afterward giving her dietary choices. Or the rental car clerk responding to Steve Martin's obscene tirade in Planes, Trains and Automobiles?
It's like as I said when I heard John McCain picked Sarah Palin for vice president, my first response was, "This was the best woman he could find?" (In this case gender is relevant, since republicans had never picked a female for vice president it was an issue.) I thought of many other female public figures, like Elizabeth Dole, who ran the American Red Cross, might have been a good choice instead of a woman who was arguably almost as dumb as Dan Quayle.
If they wanted to do this movie by having the four lead characters be female, there are a number of actresses who are known funny that they could have used. Hell, put Ellen DeGeneres in as the skirt-chasing Lothario (Bill Murray in the original film) only she''s a lesbian. Now that scenario might create some really funny scenes. |
