The weird thing is, I never see German Shepherd owners who are as frivolous with controlling their dogs as pit bull owners. Is it just that the vast majority of shelter dogs are pit bulls? Is it that we don't have Cesar Millan telling people on TV that German Shepherds are an unfairly maligned breed, so the liberal owners start overzealously applying principles of tolerance to their dog's behavior? Or is it just something about the German Shepherd's bearing that tells their owners not to fuck around?


I think to some degree when a pit bull bites somebody it becomes this huge thing in a way other breeds wouldn't.

We have adopted two Golden Retrievers. Gritty (I didn't name him) is the most beautifully behaved dog you could ever ask for. He went through obedience training twice as his brothers or cousins or something were in the Air Bud movies. (He has a mohawk so he looked different enough where he couldn't pass for Air Bud.) Absolutely the finest specimen of dog you could ask for, except that sometimes without warning he will go off on another dog. At the dog park he is 100% fine. He's sometimes randomly "leash aggressive." He wouldn't run across the street to take a bite out of crime, but he'll lunge.

Now, someone might say, "Hey, this Golden attacked my dog" and instantly there's five people saying what docile breeds they are. Whereas if a pit bull said "Peace" to me while I was walking down the street, I'd make a rage comic out of it.
