While I'm finding top quality, world class breeders at work my wife takes the kids to a couple of (really decent) rescue shelters. Of course, my boy instantly soul-bonds with a "mostly" chocolate Lab. I am informed of this over the phone. The puppy had just been dropped off so they had yet to spay, chip and vaccinate her. It'd be a few days until we could bring her home. That evening they take me to the shelter to meet her.
While waiting for shelter people to bring her out, my wife and I wander around the main floor and 100+ kennel cages and stalls to see the other dogs and puppies. No bullshit, 90% of them are either full Pits or enough so that instead of looking like mixes they just looked like mutant Pit Bulls. It was honestly fucking unnerving. Apparently rescue shelters are awash in the fucking things. They had a few other breeds, sequestered away from this mass in another section, about a 10th of the size of the main kennel. When I brought this up to one of the girls working there, she nods, looked at her shoes and said "too many pit bull owners aren't very responsible people."
So they bring out my dog and she is obviously dominantly a Chocolate Lab, but the touch of Pit Bull in her is undeniable. She also turned out to be the best Dog I ever had. I wouldn't have done better with a breeder. |
