First, not believing isn't believing, like some goofy flamable/ inflamable accident of language. Please do not just assume there can never be reasonable evidence demonstrating the nonexistence of god and then arrogantly assume that those folks with the desire and time to look into it a little more closely are just as dogmatically and irrationally BELIEVING that god does not exist as the religious who hold the opposite conviction. And please do not think one is immune to self delusion and the other consequences of having a human brain between one's ears, like the stock investor who reads about innate biases and heuristics that cause people to make bad financial decisions and thinks, "well now I know about that so I just won't do those things!"
I'll grant that millitant athiests are a strange species of asshole.
In any event, if I had to describe and explain religion in one word it would be "adaptive". But then I'd have to apply the Ford Prefect edit and change that to "mostly adaptive". I don't give people a hard time about believing in god or clinging to delusions, even nauseating newagey poop like Shnibble's (except on rare occasions like this post), because we all do it. Whatever it takes to get you through the day, man. |
