I used to consider Atheism a form of religion, and I also considered an agnostic to not be atheist but I understand better why it does qualify.
The term "atheist" means one thing: someone who does not believe in a God or gods. An agnostic is a little less than this: they don't know. As such, if you are not a theist, that is, if you do not believe in a god because you don't know if there is one, then you simply are an atheist.
I suspect a lot of people are Christian agnostics; they believe in God but in their heart of hearts they don't really think its true or they don't really have faith. Some may actually have no real belief or faith but just go through the motions because it's easier to pretend than to admit the truth.
In my case it was two paragraphs and 15 minutes to make me lose all belief in Christianity. Although sometimes I do chew God out when he fucks up badly. Sometimes it helps.
