I've been playing Ironcast off and on for about a month now and I finally beat the last boss. I don't feel like my victory had much to do with my skill level and everything to do with the fact that the RNG spat out blueprints for the best weapons and components in the game and the best perks at levelup, and didn't fuck me with the gem distribution in the fight. If I were to hazzard a guess, I'd say your skill maybe has 30% to do with your victory in this game.
FTL is a game with an invisible RNG. You made the shot and the RNG either said "fuck you" or it didn't. Puzzle Quest turned its RNG into a Match-3 and gave players a satisfying semblance of control with their skill at gem manipulation. Ironcast does both and it's infuriating. You can have the most brilliant multi-gem arrangement filling your ammo magazine, but only hit 1 for 3 because the invisible RNG said you still miss. It's maddening!
Meanwhile we have games like Invisible Inc, Spelunky, and Crypt of the Necrodancer where the arrangement of the level is random, but every success and failure is completely up to the player's skill, and I never get tired of them.
Such a pity because I love the concept of Ironcast so much. |
