My friend Andrea, who lived in Lakewood for most of the 14 years I knew her, stated that Denver was basically a cow town with skyscrapers. That some companies found it so difficult to find qualified workers for technical occupations that a number moved elsewhere. From what you're describing, it sounds like the quality of ordinary workers is about the level of when The Denver Dry Goods Company was founded in 1888.

Andrea told me how when Denver Cops screw up badly, but not quite bad enough to fire them, they get sent out to the airport, that's about as low as you can fall on the police force and not get canned.

I lived in Denver back in the mid 1970s, then we moved out to Aurora where we lived in an apartment building across the street from Buckingham Square. Later I'd spend a couple of summers with my sister, one when she lived in a distant suburb and the other was when she lived in mid Denver over on Ivanhoe about a block from Colfax Avenue. It was so far back that I actually visited Stapleton Airport while I was there. (I have a story about airports.)

I heard a lot of the same things when I was there. I think it has to do with the cost of living and the competitive environment. In Southern California it's much more competitive and as such if you want to make a living you have to hustle, you have to do good work in order to get repeat business. But if there aren't that many people around doing similar work you can get away with shoddy performance. Since I was a kid at the time I wasn't aware of cost of living but my sister mentioned that because almost everything coming to Denver has to be imported it makes everything more expensive.

I mean, I used to ride one of the buses going through Orange County in California and you get to a major city with huge skyscrapers, and across the street is a three block square strawberry farm. It's because of a special exemption to protect farmers who'd otherwise have to move because increasing property values raise the assessment and make operating a farm uneconomic. So, in exchange for a promise to continue to use their property to grow crops for ten years they got a big discount on their property taxes. So figure, if a strawberry farm is within twenty miles of your stores and the farmer isn't paying - or isn't paying much - property tax, how much cheaper your fruit is vs. what has to be shipped by truck or train a thousand miles.

So people who live in the Denver area want the kind of environment where it's really cold in the winter and there's a lot of snow - possibly because they like close skiing - vs. a near all-year-long mild climate in Southern California, and a lot more people live there. So those who live in the Denver area have to put up with people willing to live in a strong winter area with a higher cost of living vs. people who want to live in a nice climate with a lower cost of living like SoCal.
