At no point do they even debate the role of the player. Participant? Director? Embedded? Fetishist? We have no idea what actually happens to a person when they play a game, or read a book, or watch a movie. If you're going to presume a bunch of shit, at least make it clear. I used to think feminism and marxism and critical theory were interesting - a bunch of fresh perspectives on art! More tools for the toolbox! But once you've said that Alien was scary because men are afraid of being raped by an amorphous black dude, you're pretty much spent.
As I read more of the critiques coming out of these schools of thought, it became painfully obvious that the work be damned, it would fit in the given frame. I suppose it's a given that an ideology will be predictable, but knowing that there are certain thoughts a critic isn't allowed to think, or even feelings they aren't allowed to confront makes their work fundamentally weak. |
