I would agree you pretty much need to give your characters a weapon skill by Rafiki 09/23/2014, 8:38am PDT
You get a substantial bonus to hit just putting one point into them, so it's pretty crucial if you expect to get anywhere with combat. I would also advise giving one character surgeon from the start. I had to reload because I had two characters get incapacitated and I had no way to revive them so they bled out and died. This was like 20 minutes into the game.

I took toaster repair for one person because I always have to pick the world's stupidest skill in these games just to see how they pan out. Thus far, I've only found one toaster to repair but I've only completed the radio tower and part of Highpoint (radio tower is the first mission you ever get, for anyone that hasn't started the game yet). I looted the repaired toaster and got some spray paint out of it, which makes sense.

I also picked up Animal Whisperer, and now I have a goat that gives me a bonus to perception or awareness or something. It can't fight in combat, and I don't know if it can even be targeted. I assume it can take collateral damage from explosives, so I'm going to be real sad when someone blows it up with a rocket launcher. I also don't know if it technically counts as a party member. I'm hoping at some point I get to sacrifice it in a pagan blood ritual.

I'm not too far into the game, but my initial impression is overall positive. I'm still finding my way around the interface, but it's not too bad. I'm not sure I like the idea of being able to rotate the camera. On the one hand, it might make it easier to see things in combat, on the other hand it seems like a bullshit excuse to hide lootable items and penalize me for not swiveling the camera everywhere. I also don't like having to phone home to officially level up. Oh, I'm sorry, earn a field promotion. It's just an extra pointless step, and experience isn't tallied until the end of combat anyways.
