Yeah there's a lot of gearhead porn in AC if you really want to tweak and squeeze that last 5 pounds of weight out of your loadout, but if you don't want to fuck with it too much then the principles are pretty sound:
Heavier chassis = more armor, less mobility
Lighter chassis = less armor, more mobility
Faster legs = can carry less armor/heavier guns
Slower legs/Tank treads = can carry more armor/heavier guns
Boosters are a choice of high-power versus high-endurance
Weapons are a choice of balancing damage output and ammo restrictions. Or you can just pack a grenade launcher.
That's all you really need to know. Though I think after Armored Core 3 they did start catering more to the gearhead side of the equation.
