I prefer WRPGs to JRPGs (when JRPGs existed) because WRPGs don't actively fight the player the way JRPGs do. WRPGs want you to make yourself into a demigod and use your newly acquired power to crush everything before you, while JRPGs expect you to complete a near-infinite number of repetitive, unfun tasks so that you can progress the story so that you can complete a new set of near-infinite repetitive tasks. One is good if you're looking for some escapism and entertainment after a shitty day, the other is good if you have no job, no girlfriend, and an endless amount of time to kill.
This perfectly describes why I'm having such a hard time putting Paper Sorcerer down. If you haven't played The Dark Spire, I recommend Paper Sorcerer without reservation. If you HAVE, you've already witnessed the games's aesthetic inspiration and sadly PS comes up short.
BUT, PS has a completely superior combat system and huge potential for min/maxing your team into a death machine.
There are no random encounters in the main dungeon, but there is an optional dungeon, the catacombs, with random encounters and random treasure chests where you can grind to your heart's content. In normal difficulty, the game is balanced so you can just play through the main dungeon without entering the catacombs, and win. The higher difficulties necessitate grinding in the catacombs, yet are much more satisfying to defeat because they aren't just a carefully scripted rail. |
