But here I am, about to buy the third game in a series that I haven't really enjoyed at all AT FULL PRICE. I couldn't give a shit about women developers; I don't think I haven't enjoyed DA because the leads are women. Rather, I know my dealer doesn't care about me or my health or my enjoyment of the product. In fact, last time she cut the dope with battery acid and laughed at me to my face as it burned in my veins. And here I am again, fiending for another hit and ready to pay out the nose for it. Because I'm a degenerate addict.
Wait one red second. What about the games do you like then? Baldur's Gate II has the best fantasy tactical combat in the world. Do you like that game? Is that what you like about Dragon Age?
the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
I liked Baldur's Gate II! But I liked Shogo: MAD and Starfleet Command III and Sacrifice and Summoner and Legacy of Kain and lots of other stuff that I find difficult to replay today. Just thinking about reinstalling BGII and getting the mods sorted out and then dealing with crashes and incompatible saves and things breaking for no reason makes me grimace. But I bought the Enhanced Editions of BG and BGII on Steam to avoid that and haven't even launched them. It's a shame.
I prefer WRPGs to JRPGs (when JRPGs existed) because WRPGs don't actively fight the player the way JRPGs do. WRPGs want you to make yourself into a demigod and use your newly acquired power to crush everything before you, while JRPGs expect you to complete a near-infinite number of repetitive, unfun tasks so that you can progress the story so that you can complete a new set of near-infinite repetitive tasks. One is good if you're looking for some escapism and entertainment after a shitty day, the other is good if you have no job, no girlfriend, and an endless amount of time to kill. |
