I don't understand. Mojang is not running these servers, normal people are? Their entire support structure is through the goodwill of their players and now they are saying, well, you can't make money off this?

It would seem to me that the right response to this is to tell Mojang to fuck off and run their own servers then.

Are they paying hosting for everyone running a server?

What I read was you can charge to maintain your server (or ask for "donations"). You cannot charge for your mod, or resource pack, or for your crafting app or whatever. You cannot charge for in-game items on your server. They are trying to crack down on predatory servers that kind of turn Minecraft into a pay-to-win game. That's all.
