What sucked parts sucked, guys? For me, Ken Watanabe (I finally recalled his name in the last scene) didn't get enough to do except look sad and astonished. Breaking bad dad is the best actor in the entire world and they kill him off partway in. So that wasn't great. On the other hand, he sustains the movie during the initial inevitable Godzilla-less beginning scenes.

I wasn't thrilled with this aspect of the opening scenes: we know we're seeing the birth of a monster but I had no idea which. I came in just slightly late, after the bikini atol explosion or whatever, just in time for the GODZILLA title shot. Was there some indication there of what they later explain re: trying to kill Godzilla in the 50s? So, surprise: the monster isn't Godzilla, it's Mothra. (Gf: he looks stupid, like predator on steroids. Me: it's not Godzilla it's Mothra. Gf: oh ok.) So, let down: Godzilla's origins are left to be explained by our pal Dr Ken. On the other hand, does that mean they sorta include the original Gojira with that explanation?

OTHER THAN THAT it was pretty sweet. Godzilla is a badass and just when I thought maybe they weren't gonna include his epic radioactive bad breath, there it was. The monster fight scenes were amazing and seeing them from the somewhat limited perspective of our human protagonists was actually really cool. A guy named Ford gets to help Godzilla and give MothraMomma a billion abortions and that ruled too. And they included a goofy japanese kid with a baseball cap and even he was ok (and brief).

I give it 4 stars.
