You know that feeling of apprehension when someone with terrible taste ropes you into something they insist you'll love? But you know it'll be terrible? Like how when someone your parents' age heard you were "into games" so they got excited about showing you Candy Crush?
A relative at a family gathering insisted The Illusionist was "One of the best movies I've ever seen," and everyone sat down to watch
The movie rides on the ridiculous premise that stage magicians are noble artists and not creepy weirdos. Ed Norton performs tricks that are literally magical: feats that wouldn't be possible now, let alone 1889. Not only is the technology impossible, but he performs all his tricks alone. None of the stage crew know how any of it works!
What follows is a setup and twist so obvious that it looped around and surprised me for there not being more to it. I kept expecting the super obvious twist to be revealed early on so they could get to the second, more clever twist. Nope. I didn't realize until the very end that the audience wasn't supposed to know about it. You know exactly what's going on in the first half hour, but the very end plays it exactly like The Usual Suspects reveal expecting your mind to be blown.
None of the relatives had seen The Usual Suspects.
A better master magician movie would show how he does these impossible tricks. None of them are save for one lame carny guessing game. If it's all unexplained, literal wizard magic then what's so fucking impressive about that? It's just wizard shit the writer makes up on the fly and there's no tension because the audience knows there's no limits and there's no fun trying to figure it out. It plays out like a heist movie that skips all the planning and details.
Paul Giamatti tries his best. Ed Norton reminds everyone his range begins and ends at Ikea boy.
Fuck this movie. Fuck magicians. I still love you, relative. But fuck your taste in movies. |
