also, there was an undeniable sense of excitement and awe at experiencing the gameplay of max payne for the first time, despite it running like horrorshit on my computer for that era. popping holes in the subway station tiles and having them make tile cracking sound effects, with splinters and fragments of the walls and floors flying off every bullet impact colored to match the exact impact location was mindblowing, and I only appreciate it more as I learn how hard that shit would have been to code 10 years ago. on top of all that, a fast paced 3rd person action game with a giant arsenal, a story that was tongue in cheek noir with a ton of john woo elements that actually outdid john woo's own video game. max payne 3 seems like a regression.
Agreed. Man, I loved the first Max Payne. The second one isn't bad either, though it suffers from the same thing that Lethal Weapon 2 did, where the protagonist in the original is all bent out of shape about his dead wife, but in the second one he is fuckin' with wild abandon. Okay, I guess that's not really "suffering." Anyway, I enjoyed your analysis.
