They say the game became progressively more Max Payne-y over the course of development, in accordance with Take-Two's desire to salvage some value from their purchase of the Max Payne rights (see also: certain disastrous flailings about with the X-COM brand). This is possibly why the very Max Payneiest bits seem to show a more sophisticated understanding of which aspects of the original design were actually enjoyable. I suppose we could look at them as demo stages for the much improved sequel we're never getting?
In other Max Payne news, I finally got around to watching the 2008 movie last night... and almost liked it! It was fairly interesting to look at - all the sets seemed slightly oversized, in the fashion of third-person shooter locations (an effect which I'm sure was only exaggerated by the fact that Mark Wahlberg, like all great actors, is approximately five feet tall) - and some of the line readings were just hilariously sincere (again Wahlberg proved an asset, as his public persona would lead you to believe he posesses an almost Joey Tribbiani-like lack of self-awareness, to the point where you could possibly believe he thought he was making a serious drama). It also did that thing where some scenes were staged as comic book tableaux, which - given the cast and subject matter, and a certain general ineptitude - in this case came off like nothing so much as a parody of James Gray. Honestly, it was probably just a few good action scenes away from being a really good action movie. |
