I think the great one’s line about strutting and fretting might be the best thing I’ve ever read. In retrospect, I seem to have been doing one or the other at nearly every waking moment (and not infrequently in dreams, now that it occurs to me.) Of all the shameful episodes whose recollection brings a wince, though, it seems to me the very worst, the most memorable, and the most unforgivable, are the ones where I'm somehow managing to do BOTH at once. "Look at MEEEEEEE!" where "me" is a collage of half-truths, blown smoke, and brass-balled bluffing -- a duck-blind for my actual, grubby, awkward, occasionally quite stupid self to hide behind in the practice of pointless cruelty and the pursuit of cheap-won praise. My understanding of Jerkcity's (and Pee-Wee's) motivation comes from self-recognition. Share it?
There's an immaturity comon to all these points of view, and a cowardice; a feeling that the writer is missing some vital internal fulcrum. In a word, I'd say: Unmanly.

I'll start you off: That Get Your War On comic is concise, funny and insightful. If I can't blame it for being superficial, can you really praise it for being concise? Like you said, it's a 3-panel strip.
I did laugh at it, but the comedy was unintentional. Still with the pipeline, huh? I actually didn't think that anybody but Ted Rall took that BS seriously. At this late date, with elections in Afghanistan, Iraq, and heartening developments across the region, can you losers think of NOTHING better? I'd also appreciate it if you laid out the case for what's so sinister about the pipeline should it ever come to be: if you do, I think you'll see it requires some pretty intense moonbattery.
Also, "{issue that helps my opponent} is distracting people from {issue that helps me}" is an old politician's trick, one you should know by now.
Finally, "Most people think {some BS I made up}" is an old ad-man's trick, like "the Pepsi generation." The usage here is so blatant, it’s kind of comical: do "most people" even know who Rashid Dostum is?
Do you really believe that most people who DO know who he is believe that pipeline BS? Absurd.
So, funny, I'll give you, but not insightful, obviously.
The American Digest essay is longwinded, cumbersome, pompous, boring and a waste of time to read. Gerard does go on, but I'm not gonna throw any stones :-)
I do think there are some problems with it, actually. I think it's unduly harsh on Michael, and the stuff about tyranny is over the top. I still think it's a smart take on the ideas behind the case, and their effects in our lives. There are a lot of interesting facets to the case, having nothing to do with the Christian Right, if you can believe it. You can continue insisting that you didn't link to something stupid, approvingly, or you can let it go.
If you have any time left over, I'd appreciate hearing any thoughts you have about proper humour writing as well. I'm a mediocrity in that department, but at least I know it. |
