I played Civ V a bunch when it first came out and I don't think I ever got past the medieval age. It felt a bit bland, and obviously "gamey". But after picking up all the DLC and the 2 expansions in the last Steam sale I'm actually really enjoying it.

There are TONS of different options and way to specialize your civ. Your base civ gives you one or two good bonuses, and one special unit and one special building. But, you can choose what benefits your religion gets, and what tenets to give your ideology, along with the social policies from vanilla Civ V.

So far I've tried out a religious based Saudi empire - spreading my religion (that gives me +1 gold per every 2 adherents) through my caravans that bring me even more gold. And growth focused Indians with a religion that gives benefits to food and friendship from city states, and an ideology that boosts research, city state friendship and specialists.

Once I wrap up the Indian game I'm going to try a war focused civ and try to conquer the world.

So yeah, it's totally squishy - but it makes it more fun to "role play". It's probably the most fun RPG I've played in a long time.
