Play every meaningful PC game from 1980 to 1996. The limitations in computing power and storage meant that creativity, design and an innate sense of fun had to grab a player's attention. A lot of developers and designers seem to think that having played every SNES game is the same thing. It is absolutely not, and the reason is because the NES, SNES and Genesis were all designed to try to make Donkey Kong Country. You can count the interesting games on those consoles that weren't sports or side-scrollers on one hand. The PC is the only platform that matters.
The fact that PC game mechanics are often cruder and less obfuscated than their console counterparts should definitely make them easier to study. Just make sure you don't lose sight of the forest for the trees and figure the way to make Pokémon more accessible would be to replace the bottomless depth and captivating mystery with a Dungeons & Dragons character sheet. You know, for busy middle-aged nerds.
I had no idea that Pokemon had ANY depth. Anything hidden at all. Wow. I thought it was a garbage franchise and I thought that the college-aged students, 18-22, on imgur that don't shut up about it were pathetic and mewling children.
I am not going to start playing Pokemon, but I am intrigued to know this now. Thank you for sharing this. (I am trying to decide if what they did is a good thing.)
Also while we are here... how does Pokemon work? Can you take a Pokemon you somehow got from the original Gameboy and play it on ... whatever the most recent Pokemon system is?
