To recap: They could have chosen to side with innocent families suffering a much more blatant civil liberties violation during an action that sets the immediate groundwork for a police state, but instead chose to side with the bomber on a verbal legal proceeding technicality that may one day theoretically lead to gradual erosion of suspect rights.
The sights in Watertown on Friday were horrifying. Both in terms of police response and not just total public acceptance, but enthusiastic embracing. As soon as they caught them the streets were flooded with U-S-A horn honking, cheering block parties, and running through the streets with American flags. Public transit is now running with "WE ARE ONE BOSTON" and "BOSTON STRONG" displays. The public wants an authoritarian clampdown.
The ACLU needed to make this about violating the rights of the public at a time when this country is teetering on the edge of a stupidly paranoid and gungho surveillance state (hey did you know CISPA passed this week while everyone wasn't looking?), but out of the whole thing they chose to champion the worst possible party regarding the least pressing issue.
There's idealism and pragmatism and the ACLU is absolutely retarded awful when it comes to priorities and choosing which battles to fight.
But hey at least the police state will let you choose which public bathroom you can walk into!
(I will do my part by not donating another $5 to them so they won't have to go through the trouble of sending me $10 in fundraising material again.) |
