I think they intentionally made the main game's ending so god awful just to boost DLC sales by fans desperate for a real ending.
Nope. Zero story progression at all. Begins and ends exactly where the main game left off with no development or insight.
So you have to ask yourself if Alan Wake is worth playing without an amusing atmosphere or story. The combat is sort of improved in that it's very difficult and challenging now; I had to use everything at my disposal compared to always being maxed out in the original game. Some more environment objects to kill enemies. That's about it.
Moving on to American Nightmare....
You know those direct to video movie sequels that use the same setting, props, and costumes as the blockbuster original yet still feel cheap and rushed? That's exactly the vibe I get from this.
So it's a sort of open-ish hub world deal that almost reminds me of a cross with Borderlands...both in gameplay and looks. Gone are all the gorgeous environments, lighting, and fog effects from the original. The Arizona level takes on the color pallet of Borderlands combined with a cheap plastic feel to everything, like removing all the trees exposes the levels for the set pieces they are.
There's a bigger weapon variety but the combat is so piss easy. The flashlight recharges in 3 seconds, the enemies are no longer fast, no projectile attacks to worry about, and half of your foes can be killed by the flashlight alone (slow spiders you just shine the light on). You also can't play with a controller anymore because they took out the auto aim (but they left the Xbox controller icons for the prompts).
The story sucks.
Haven't tried the arcade mercenaries mode yet, but if I only wanted pure combat Alan Wake I could just play the much better looking and handling DLC again.
