Take the control room scenes away from Cabin in the Woods, paint on a darker tone and you pretty much have this movie. There were maybe 3 gore parts I chuckled at but that was about it. Not terrible but I wouldn't call it decent.
Ruthless.com pretty much nails the rest. They try to squeeze in homages to the original but most of it doesn't work because it's missing the other parts that made it work. The montage of Ash slapping together improvisational equipment worked because it was the effort of an arrogant boob to push back after being beaten and driven crazy for an hour. It doesn't work in the remake because the guy - whose name I can't even remember 2 hours later - is a passive pouter for the entire movie. The homages are shoehorned into characters that don't fit them.
They try to subvert some of the expectations but like Cabin in the Woods it all comes too late.
Weird fact: the soundtrack uses the Silent Hill air raid siren in a bunch of parts. |
