But how often are you supposed to give in to organizations that won't change with the times and industries that are clearly past their expiration date? Don't we make fun of the music industry for similar reasons? The coal mining unions had broken the two prior Labour ministers. A big reason Thatcher won was because of the Winter of Discontent. The coal industry was being subsidized with over a billion pounds of British government money and refused to take cuts in their raise during a time of double digit inflation. No pits were allowed to be closed if they were money sinks. It sucks that a lot of innocent unskilled laborers lost their livelihood, but I'm still not convinced that the unions winning would have been a better outcome. I suspect history will be kinder to her than popular opinion now.
