Coal mining and steel were heavily subsidized by the government because they were dying industries and unions were ridiculously powerful. Downsizing them was the right thing to do, economically. Her denouncement of Mandela's org as "terrorists" was essentially correct (they did bomb government organizations) and she denounced apartheid in principal. She refused economic sanctions, but this seems petty since the same liberal contingency that bitches about that also bitches about when the US imposed sanctions on Iraq since it devastated their economy and mainly hurt the poor. She was also pretty progressive in terms of drug, HIV, gun, and environmental policy. Her policy towards homosexuality was friendlier than most other conservatives of the time (yes section 28, which was never enforced, but she voted to decriminalize it the 1960s unlike Reagan who refused to admit it even existed). She raised NHS and education spending. Unemployment rose but she traded that for getting inflation under control. Taxes overall went up during her tenure.
I'm not going to say she was World's Greatest Conservative or whatever nonsense Fox has been saying. She went insane with power by her third term, the poll tax was a horrible idea especially she had raised taxes on lower income brackets, imposed a higher VAT, and unemployment was still double digits. Her deregulation of the financial industry probably contributed to the recent financial crash. She divided her own party and they eventually forced her to step down. Her foreign policy wasn't generally well thought out unless it involved Gorbachev or fighting with Argentina. But, I haven't read one person who seriously wants to reverse her economic policies of industrial deregulation or most of her social policies. If she was starting in American politics today, she'd be a very conservative Democrat, more Andrew Sullivan than Ann Coulter. It's also strange how much criticism of her involves comparing her to a man, as though women politicians are supposed to bring cookies and talk about their kids. We got that in Palin and, answer honestly, which is worse? |
